Dear {{ contact.FIRSTNAME }}, Chances are, you’ve never seen a Yellow Envelope. But you can see one in your mind’s eye. Because you’ve seen yellow, and envelope, you can sort of add them up. Bingo. The non-sighted (the blind, as we still call them) can’t. There are none on our mailing list, but conscientious web design takes care of the non-sighted by writing code for accessibility. A bit of code that might read like < emph > might emphasise bold on your browser, while instructing screen reading software to read it a bit differently. December 3 was World Disability Day. It’s the day we try to think of wheelchair ramps, large fonts and the like. But sometimes, it’s about seeing things (there we go again) differently. Our clients Wild Stone certainly did. They make grooming products that smell great. But this time, they decided to make a perfume for the non-sighted. They came to us, their design partners for 15 years, to help out. They asked us to create something that didn’t come from a position of pity but to celebrate the sensory experience. Here’s how we thought. The non-sighted enjoy perfume as much as us sighted people, but differently. Maybe their sense is magnified? Sensory deprivation often does that. Maybe it has an untold dimension for the non-sighted? We can only guess. Seeing isn’t just seeing—it can make us picture “yellow envelope”. Smell isn’t just smell—fragrance can make a man in a leather jacket so much more than a mannequin. Our pack uses a twist to force empathy in a bold and flagrant way: it levels the playing field between you and the non-sighted. The only visible letters are in Braille, and the English text must be sensed by touch, like the Braille letters. Meanwhile, the visible colour spectrum celebrates sensory experience. Each is overlaid with a unique texture that can be felt. Colour for the sighted, and for the non-sighted, a magnified perception of fragrance. Have a look at our in the making blog.
